THE RICHARD CHALLONER SCHOOL was opened in 1959. The first Headteacher, Mr. 0 T Jones BSc, guided the School successfully through it's early years. He was very ably assisted by Mr. Frank Gosling as deputy Head Master.
The first Chairman of Governors was Fr. Laurence Duprez, Parish Priest of Worcester Park, followed by Monsignor Hugh Hunt, Parish Priest of New Malden. He was succeeded by Fr. Cornelius Beausang and on his retirement as Chair of Governors in 1991, he was succeeded by Mr. Pat Parker OBE.
On his retirement as Head Mr. Jones was succeeded by Mr. John Gwynne MA, (Oxon.) in September 1977. At the interview before his appointment Mr. Gwynne asked why there were not more students applying for admission. During his headship, his wise guidance and with the help of a capable staff saw a large increase in the number of applicants for admission. Indeed applications increased so much that the number of places had to increased and temporary buildings were erected to provide additional classrooms. |
